St Etheldreda made a valid point, when St Theodore blessed her secret marriage to St Chad:

'The one good God set holy matrimony of a husband and wife above all, when he joined our souls for eternity. And as Father and Mother Superior and a living holy couple, and hopefully as parents of holy children from my womb, we are also leading by example our community as one big holy family! How can that be an angels' fall, when we only answer again God's call?! As that Wilfred and Hilda were saying and they were secretly cursing me to become a walking tomb, and we know that they are as Roman mercenaries from our simple and ancient faith straying.'

Shortly afterwards St Chad was murdered, and later St Etheldreda, on order of Bishop Wilfred and abbess Hilda by his monk Owini, and St Chad and St Etheldreda knew in advance that the latter would be their trust betraying, as he only did pretend their secret vow a helping hand to lend but his faith was in fact never ever intact, and Owini was at every opportunity from their truth and from God's law straying.

Owini had the murder committed and Wilfred and Hilda had the true events from the records omitted.
